MSAD 55 Safe Schools/ Healthy Students

Serving the families and schools of Baldwin, Cornish, Hiram, Parsonsfield, and Porter

Now that the MSAD 55 Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative is winding down, many will ask: "What now?... Once the money is gone, what will happen to all the programming?" We have been planning for sustainability since the very start of this Initiative, and most of our programming will continue beyond the grant period. The following are just a few of our accomplishments that will continue on:

*Over $200,000.00 worth of safety and security equipment will remain in the district keeping our staff and students safe. These include, surveillance cameras on school grounds, cameras on buses, flashing speed zone lights in front of the South Hiram schools as well as Baldwin, 2-way communication radios, buzzer entry systems at the elementary schools, etc...

* Our partnership with the Sacopee Valley Health Center has resulted in a child psychiatrist on staff who will continue to serve this community beyond the grant. Additionally, the SVHC had expanded its own capacity since the start of the grant and now has more counselors on staff treating both mental health and substance abuse issues as well as a pediatrician.

* The school district will continue to partner with the Oxford County Sheriff's Office to provide the schools with a School Resource Officer.

* Our mental health partner Tri-County Mental Health will continue to provide in-school therapists to work with MSAD 55 students.

* The Sacopee Valley Playgroup will continue to meet weekly and is now run by parents. The playgroup space is provided by Porter Town Hall at no charge.

* The district trained 7 staff members in the Schools Where Everyone Belongs  anti-bullying program, who will continue to work with staff and students to implement the programming.

* Character Counts will continue to be implemented in the elementary schools.

* The Middle School has formed its own PBIS (positive behavioral intervention systems) team to promote positive school climate.

Welcome!
What we do....

The MSAD 55 Safe Schools-Healthy Students Initiative is a federally funded, 3-year intervention program designed to help create safer schools and promote healthy living in our community.

The project  involves a comprehensive bullying prevention program, opportunities for students to become more involved in community activities, improved mental health services, alcohol and drug prevention and education, and improvement of safety of school facilities. The funding is also be used to hire a school resource officer and additional counselors for the district and promoting positive cooperation between the schools and families served by our program. In addition to school based programs we also provide mental health services for the families of our area and have expanded our services for children prior to kindergarten. The plan takes into account that family involvement is crucial to the success of any program and all activities are designed to promote participation by parents.

Our goal....
The goal of the MSAD 55 Safe Schools-Healthy Students is to change our schools and our community by working together to develop programs to reduce violence and promote healthy living. We hope that our programs will help students succeed in school and thrive in life after graduation.
